“Do Not Conform To The World!”
CHURCH SCHOOL SUMUP
Theme: When Commitment Becomes a Choice
Weekly Lesson
Radical Commitment to God’s Way
Adults Topic: Do Not Conform to the World
Israel had experienced God’s faithfulness, provision, protection, and deliverance. But Joshua would not allow the people to rest on what God had done in the past. They now had to decide how they would live in response. Their declaration, “We will serve the Lord,” had to become more than words, it had to become a way of life.
This lesson reminds us that commitment to God requires a decision, and that decision must be demonstrated in what we are willing to surrender, reject, and obey.
Scripture Focus
Joshua 24:18–27
The people repeatedly declared their desire to serve the Lord, but Joshua pressed them beyond confession into commitment. He challenged them to put away the foreign gods among them, incline their hearts to the Lord, and live according to the covenant they were affirming.
Their response reveals the movement of genuine commitment:
Choose God → Put away competing loyalties → Incline your heart → Obey His voice.
Joshua challenges us to consider whether our declaration of faith is actually reflected in the direction of our lives.
Hymnology
“Saviour, Like a Shepherd Lead Us!”
This week’s hymn reminds us that following God means allowing Him to lead us. A shepherd does not merely comfort the sheep, the shepherd directs them. To pray, “Saviour, like a shepherd lead us,” is also to say, I am willing to follow where You lead. We cannot ask God to lead us while continually choosing another direction.
Key Takeaway
Commitment to God must move beyond confession into obedience. Israel said, “We will serve the Lord,” but Joshua challenged them to remove whatever competed with that declaration. The same challenge remains for us: Choosing God means something else cannot remain in His place. Remember: Choose Him. Put away what competes. Incline your heart. Obey His voice.
Application Prompt
What am I declaring with my mouth that my choices may not yet fully reflect? This week, ask God to reveal anything competing with your devotion, obedience, attention, or allegiance. What needs to be put away so your heart can be more fully inclined toward Him? And where is God asking you to move beyond saying, “I will serve the Lord,” and demonstrate that commitment through obedience?
This Week’s Affirmation
I will choose the Lord, put away anything that competes for my devotion, and incline my heart to serve and obey Him. Choose. Surrender. Obey.
