Lesson: Remember God’s Actions – “Family Legacies!”
Scripture Focus: Joshua 4:14-24
Every family has stories.
Some are repeated at gatherings, others are preserved in photographs, and still others are remembered through the words and experiences of those who lived them.
But among the most valuable stories we can preserve are the testimonies of God’s faithfulness.
Stories of how He provided when resources were limited.
How He sustained us through uncertainty.
How He opened doors, strengthened our faith, and helped us overcome circumstances that once seemed impossible.
These are more than memories.
They are testimonies that can become spiritual legacies when we intentionally share them.
In Joshua 4, the Israelites had experienced another extraordinary demonstration of God’s power.
Under Joshua’s leadership, they crossed the Jordan River on dry ground.
But God did not want the significance of that experience to disappear as the people moved forward.
He instructed them to establish a memorial using twelve stones taken from the river.
The stones would serve as a reminder of what God had done.
More importantly, they would become a teaching opportunity.
When future generations asked about the stones, their elders were to explain how God had made a way for His people.
The memorial was never intended to remain silent.
It was meant to inspire conversation.
And those conversations would preserve the testimony of God’s faithfulness.
This presents an important challenge for believers today.
We cannot assume that the next generation will understand our relationship with God simply because they observe our religious practices.
They need opportunities to ask questions.
They need explanations that connect biblical truths to everyday experiences.
And they need testimonies that help them recognize God’s faithfulness beyond the pages of Scripture.
Our exploration of “Sharing Legacy” invites us to consider three meaningful responsibilities:
Explaining the Lord’s Prayer: We have opportunities to help younger believers understand that prayer is more than reciting familiar words. It is an expression of our relationship with God.
Explaining Baptism: We can teach the biblical meaning of this sacred practice so that the next generation understands its connection to Christian faith and discipleship.
Explaining Communion: We can help younger believers recognize why Christians remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the significance of participating in the Lord’s Supper.
These conversations matter because spiritual traditions become more meaningful when we understand the truths they represent.
A legacy is not preserved simply because the next generation repeats what we did. It is strengthened when they understand why our faith matters.
TONIGHT, CONSIDER THIS QUESTION
What stories of God’s faithfulness am I preserving for the next generation, and what am I doing to make sure those stories are understood?
Consider whether there is a testimony you have shared often with your contemporaries but rarely with someone younger.
THIS WEEK’S REFLECTION
God wants us to remember His faithfulness, preserve the stories of what He has done, and intentionally pass those testimonies to future generations so they will know and trust Him.
Our experiences may become someone else’s encouragement when we are willing to tell the story.
A RESPONSE FOR THE WEEK
This Week’s Affirmation:
I will remember God’s faithfulness, tell what He has done, and pass His story to the next generation.
Identify one meaningful experience of God’s faithfulness in your life.
Share it with someone from another generation, explaining not only what happened but what the experience taught you about trusting God.
Remember His Works. Preserve the Testimony. Pass the Legacy Forward.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for the countless ways You have demonstrated Your faithfulness throughout our lives. Forgive us for the times we have allowed Your mighty works to become forgotten memories. Give us wisdom to preserve our testimonies and patience to explain our faith to those who come after us. May our stories inspire confidence in You, and may our lives provide examples worthy of following. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
A HYMN TO CARRY WITH US
Our closing hymn, “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” contains the meaningful biblical reference to an Ebenezer, a stone of help.
Like the memorial stones in Joshua 4, the Ebenezer reminds us to acknowledge how God has sustained His people.
May we never become so focused on where we are going that we forget to tell how God brought us this far.
