Lesson: God Works Through Ehud
Adult Topic: A Hero Who’s Not A Hero!
Scripture Focus: Judges 3:15–23, 30
Reflection Theme: God’s Purpose Is Greater Than Our Limitations.
From The Classroom…
What happens when God’s choice does not look like ours?
We have a tendency to evaluate people according to what we recognize, what we prefer, and what we believe qualifies someone for an assignment. But the account of Ehud reminds us that God’s purpose is not restricted by human expectations.
In Judges 3, Israel needed deliverance, and God raised up Ehud, an unexpected leader whose particular abilities became significant in the unfolding of Israel’s story.
The lesson challenges us to examine more than Ehud’s identity. It invites us to consider the potential we sometimes fail to recognize in others, and even in ourselves.
How many gifts remain undeveloped because no one has acknowledged them? How many opportunities have been withheld because someone did not fit our picture of who should be chosen?
Unrealized potential is not necessarily the absence of ability. Sometimes it is the absence of recognition, encouragement, opportunity, or development.
Our classroom focus on embracing God’s choice challenged us to consider what acceptance, respect, and encouragement look like in everyday relationships.
At home, differences in schedules, routines, and personal needs require consideration.
At church, different spiritual gifts should strengthen the body rather than create competition.
Within our communities, different experiences and perspectives provide opportunities to demonstrate compassion, understanding, and the love of Christ.
Embracing the differences God allows does not require us to abandon our convictions. It requires us to recognize that our preferences are not the measure of another person’s worth or potential.
Ehud’s story includes difficult events within an ancient conflict, but its application for us is not to imitate those violent actions. Rather, we are challenged to exercise wisdom, recognize God-given abilities, and respond to His calling with courage and obedience.
Something To Think About…
Whose potential might I be overlooking because their gifts, experiences, or methods are different from mine?
And perhaps the more personal question:
Have I underestimated something God has placed within me because it does not look like what I see in someone else?
The Classroom Takeaway
God’s purpose is greater than our limitations. We must learn to recognize His hand at work, embrace the gifts He has given us, and make room for the gifts He has placed in others.
Beyond The Classroom…
This week, identify someone whose contribution may be overlooked.
Offer encouragement. Create an opportunity. Recognize a strength. Make room for that person to grow.
Then examine your own abilities. Is there a gift you have neglected because you assumed it was too small, too different, or insufficient?
Remember: Being unexpected does not mean being unusable.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for seeing purpose where we sometimes see limitations. Forgive us when our expectations prevent us from recognizing the gifts You have placed in others. Give us wisdom to embrace differences, courage to develop our abilities, and humility to support those You have called. Teach us to trust Your power and follow Your direction. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
