Weekly Lesson: Mary, The Mother of Jesus

This lesson focuses on Mary’s willingness to embrace God’s purpose through moments of wonder, uncertainty, responsibility, and sorrow. From reflecting on the events surrounding Jesus’ birth to witnessing His ministry and standing near His cross, Mary experienced both the joy and the personal cost of accepting God’s plan.

Through worship, scripture, discussion, reflection, and small-group engagement, viewers are reminded that God’s plans may be very different from what we would choose for ourselves. Yet when we trust Him, we discover that His purpose is greater, wiser, and ultimately better than our own.

Scripture Focus: Luke 2:15–19; John 3:1–5; John 19:25–27

The Scripture focus invites us to reflect on the many experiences Mary carried within her heart. In Luke 2, after the shepherds shared what they had heard concerning Jesus, Mary treasured their words and pondered them deeply. She could not yet see every detail of the future, but she continued holding God’s promises close.

The passages from John point toward the spiritual mission of Jesus and the sacrifice that mission required. Jesus came to offer new life through the Spirit, but fulfilling that purpose eventually led Him to the cross. As Mary stood nearby, she witnessed the suffering of the Son she had raised, loved, and followed.

The lesson’s discussion theme, “Fully Embracing God’s Purpose,” challenges believers to trust God even when His plan includes responsibilities, changes, or hardships they did not request. Mary’s example teaches us that faithful obedience does not always mean having every answer. Sometimes it means continuing to believe, reflect, welcome others, and remain present while God’s purpose unfolds.

The small-group discussion, “Embracing God’s Plan,” encourages participants to consider Mary’s possible thoughts during three significant moments: receiving God’s plan for her as a mother, observing Jesus at the wedding in Cana, and witnessing Him on the cross. These perspectives invite us to recognize the emotional, spiritual, and personal journey involved in saying yes to God.

Hymnology: “Something Within”

This week’s closing hymn, “Something Within,” was written by Lucie Eddie Campbell in 1919. The song was reportedly inspired by Campbell’s conversation with Connie Rosemond, a blind young man who refused to sing the blues because of his growing Christian faith.

Although he could not fully explain the change occurring in his life, Rosemond declared that there was “something within” leading him from darkness into light. His testimony inspired Campbell to write a hymn about the inward presence and transforming power of God.

“Something Within” connects beautifully with Mary’s story because her faith was sustained by an inner trust in God. She did not always understand what was happening around her, but something within her continued to hold onto God’s promise, purpose, and presence.
