On Sunday, April 26, 2015, throughout the Charlotte, NC region, houses of worship sent a loud and unified message as members donned their pink attire to celebrate breast cancer survivors, to honor those who have transitioned from labor to rest, and to educate congregants on breast health and the importance of early detection. Susan G. Komen Charlotte spearheads the effort every year to increase awareness in the fight against breast cancer. Weeping Willow AME Zion Church was one of many ministries across the city that dedicated time during morning worship to ‘Celebrate, Honor and Educate’! One cancer survivor shared the story of her journey that has led her to encourage others and touch lives in a very unique way – Quilting.
Statistics show that “African American women have a higher death rate from breast cancer than other populations. African American women in Mecklenburg County are diagnosed with late stage breast cancer at twice the rate of other populations, with only 52% reporting to have had a mammogram in the past year.” (Source: Susan G. Komen) These statistics reveal the importance of education for early detection. For additional information or to organize a Pink Sunday event, contact Susan G.
